Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss.

My 3rd grade daughter recently reminded me that we missed celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday. I could see that she was treating him as if he were a family member and that I needed to do something quick.

So, Dr. Seuss, we are officially acknowledging your birthday at Panda Designs. If you were alive on the 2nd of March in the year 2009, you would have been 105 years old. You have brought the world so much happiness and laughter. Your words have wrapped our tongues and tangled them like no one else. We continue to read your books over and over with as much magic as we did the first time. Children all across this nation celebrate your birthday and love your work.

Dr. Seuss, you were an amazing author and illustrator and you have captured the hearts of individuals everywhere. You are one of our heroes, as your work promotes literacy beautifully. What an amazing legacy. Your work reminds us how fun it can be to sit with a book and drift away to faraway places.

To encourage reading with your little ones consider the following:

1. Set aside a regular time to read to your children every day.
Studies show that regularly reading out loud to children will produce significant gains in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and the decoding of words. Whether your children are preschoolers or preteens, it will increase their desire to read independently.

2. Surround your children with reading material.
Children with a large array of reading material in their home score higher on standardized tests. Tempt your kids to read by having a large supply of appealing books and magazines at their reading level. Put the reading materials in cars, bathrooms, bedrooms, family rooms, and even near the television.

3. Have family reading time.
Establish a daily 15 to 30 minute time when everyone in the family reads together silently. Seeing you read will inspire your children to read.  Just 15 minutes of daily practice is sufficient to increase their reading fluency.

Happy Reading,

Panda Designs
